Classe 1960, bambino prodigio, musicista, graffitaro e performer. La vita sopra le righe di Jean-Michel Basquiat scorre veloce come una miccia su una corda corta. Poliglotta, irrequieto e figlio della notte, compone quel terzetto di fuoco che l’ironia della sorte ha fatto suo tramite i luoghi, i tempi ed i suoni. Furono appunto Warhol, Haring e Basquiat i 3 visual artists e performers della New York degli anni 70-80 che ispiravano e si destavano sulla base della congiunzione dei quattro angoli del quadro: musica, clubbing, performance e arte visiva.
Street artist del duo SAMO -Same Old Shit– con Al Diaz, un appena maggiorenne Jean Michel spicca limpido sui muri della città. Impegnato a calcare il dancefloor ai party nei locali più cool della city dove la rivoluzione musicale scalda le frequenze dei bassi, ogni notte, prima durante o dopo un after-hour, l’artista, fiero delle proprie origini Afro Americane, andava graffitando messaggi ironici e di denuncia contro le ipocrisie e le contraddizioni di quella società razzista.
Suona regolarmente e si esibisce al Mudd Club come dj, come clarinettista o insieme con la sua band art-rock sperimentale “Gray”. Basquiat fu un’icona performante che si faceva notare e fotografare nelle sere del Paradise o dello Studio 54 di Manhattan. La ricerca di accettazione e di arrivismo artistico compongono il grande mosaico frutto del giovane genio sregolato: un puzzle che lega la cultura musicale (hip hop e house), la letteratura beat, la moda, la club culture nonché gli stili pittorici del fumetto, del cartoon e lo street style.
Impegnato a favore delle minoranze di colore, il pittore è un’icona di stile, il suo abbigliamento nelle nottate a ballare mostrava l’espressione del proprio pensiero. Bello, cautamente dark, dannato ed in costante tensione per essere sui generis, Basquiat sfila sulla passerella di Comme des Garçons di Issey Miyak e di Kenneth Cole, non sfugge dal dipingere enormi tele indossando giacche Armani spruzzate di vernice o ad essere il primo ad indossare gli occhiali da sole Ray Ban Wayfarer in discoteca affermando così la sua figura nell’esistenza estenuante del performer.
Fidanzato di Madonna, attore in “Downtown New York” di Bertoglio, amico di molti nomi influenti nell’ambito artistico – tra cui Schnabel, O’Brian, Robert Mapplethorpe, Kenny Scharf, Rene Ricard, Annina Nosei, Bruno Bischofberger e Francesco Clemente–, nel 1980 partecipa al Times Square Show debuttando assieme ad Haring. L’exhibition di Times Square vide susseguirsi performance, video, teatri, spettacoli a luci rosse, balli, ritmiche musicali d’avanguardia ed alta moda, perpetuando per 24 ore su 24, 7 su 7 per l’intero mese di Giugno e sancendo la nascita delle nuove avanguardie della Grande Mela : Downtown e Uptown.
Tossicodipendente ed eroinomane, Basquiat continua comunque a conquistare sempre più successo esordendo con opere impegnate come Fallen Angel, Defacement (The Death of Michael Stewart) ed Untitled Skull (opere del 1981) – dove i teschi iconici dipinti acquistano le fattezze di maschere rituali pronte alla ribellione -… Pareva che la sua ascesa non avesse fine.
Nel 1983 il New York Times definisce Basquiat la mascotte dell’ormai famigerato Warhol. Andy, amico, compagno di serate e mentore di J.M.B, lo aiuta a sfondare nel mondo dell’arte. “New Art, New Money: The Marketing of an American Artist”. Di lì a poco il fenomeno emergente Afro Americano raggiunse un successo a livello Mondiale. Meravigliose e coinvolgenti due tra le ultime performances che nel 1985, a ritmo di house music, lo vedono graffitare opere monumentali sulle pareti dei night club Newyorkesi Palladium e Area Club prima di mancare nell‘88 per overdose.

Basquiat – Dark beat

Born in 1960, child prodigy, musician, graffiti artist and performer. The over-the-top life of Jean-Michel Basquiat runs fast like a fuse on a short rope. Polyglot, restless and son of the night, he composes that trio of fire that the irony of fate made him through places, times and sounds. Warhol, Haring and Basquiat were the 3 visual artists and performers of New York on 70s-80s who inspired and awakened on the basis of the conjunction of the four corners of the picture: music, clubbing, performance and visual art.
Street artist of the duo SAMO -Same Old Shit– with Al Diaz, a barely legal Jean Michel stands out clearly on the walls of the city. Committed to treading the dancefloor at parties in the coolest clubs in the City where the musical revolution heats up the bass frequencies, every night, before during or after an after-hour, the artist, proud of his African American origins, was graffitiing ironic messages and to denounce the hypocrisies and contradictions of that racist society.
He plays regularly and performs at the Mudd Club as a dj, as a clarinetist or together with his experimental art-rock band “Gray“. Basquiat was a performing icon who stood out and photographed in the Paradise parties or Studio 54 in Manhattan. The search for acceptance and artistic careerism make up the great mosaic fruit of the young unruly genius: a puzzle linking musical culture (hip hop and house), beat literature, fashion, the club culture as well as pictorial styles of comics, of cartoon and street style.
Committed to balck minorities, the painter is a style icon, his clothing during the nights dancing showed the expression of his thoughts. Handsome, cautiously dark, damned and in constant tension to be sui generis, Basquiat parades on the catwalk of the Comme des Garçons by Issey Miyak and Kenneth Cole, he doesn’t escape painting huge canvases wearing Armani jackets sprayed with paint or being the first to wear Ray Ban Wayfarer sunglasses at the disco thus affirming his figure in the exhausting existence of the performer.
Madonna’s boyfriend, actor in “Downtown New York” direct by Bertoglio, friend of many influential names in the artistic field – including Schnabel, O’Brian, Robert Mapplethorpe, Kenny Scharf, Rene Ricard, Annina Nosei, Bruno Bischofberger and Francesco Clemente– , in 1980 participates in the Times Square Show debuting with Haring. The Times Square exhibition saw a succession of performances, videos, theaters, red light shows, dances, avant-garde musical rhythms and high fashion, perpetuating for 24 hours a day, 7 a week for the entire month of June and sanctioning the birth of the new avant-garde of the Big Apple: Downtown and Uptown.
Drug and heroin addict, Basquiat nevertheless continues to conquer more and more success by debuting with committed works such as Fallen Angel, Defacement (The Death of Michael Stewart) and Untitled Skull (all from 1981) – where the iconic painted skulls acquire the features of masks rituals ready for rebellion – … His rise seemed to have no end.
In 1983, the New York Times called Basquiat the mascot of the notorious Warhol. Andy, friend, party partner and mentor of J.M.B, helps him break into the art world. “New Art, New Money: The Marketing of an American Artist”. Shortly thereafter, the emerging African American phenomenon achieved worldwide success. Wonderful and engaging are two of his latest performances which in 1985, to the rhythm of house music, saw him graffiti monumental works on the walls of the New York night clubs Palladium and Area Club before passing away in 1988 for overdose.
